Back To School Laptops

Now that it's time to go back to school for some of you, Seth Porges from Crunchgear put together a nice list of laptops for the broke ass student. The list is a nice collection of affordable lapies and brakes down what a student may be looking for. I know that this sounds like something that is simple to do, but not everyone knows what to look for in a laptop.

Software Based Secuirty For Your Lapie

I like this idea of a software based security system for your laptop. The software will sound off an Alarm if anyone tries to power down your laptop, disconnect the power, or remove the USB mouse without entering in the password. While it won't prevent someone from snatching you laptop, it will at lease give you a change to run the guy down who has it.

If you're the kind of person who likes to leave their laptop while you're getting another mocha-latte ucho grandee, then this might for you.

Asus C90 Notebook: Upgradeable

As laptops go, the one thing that has always held them back from being a true desktop replacement has been one thing, upgradability.

Well no more!!!

Asus has heard the call of the modder and is releasing the first truly upgradeable notebook-the C90. Asus is so confident in your bargain hunting skills that the lappie doesn't even come with a processor or a hard drive, the two most important parts. Asus also includes Turbo Gear software to let you over-clock whatever processor you decide on, up to 20%.

This truly could be the next mobile gamers wet dream/nightmare depending on what parts you go with, to get started it will cost $950.

New NVIDIA 8700M GT Rendering Looks Better Than Xbox 360

NVIDIA has just released their new top of the line GeForce 8700M GT, just in time to remind you that no matter how cool your new MacBook Pro or Sony VAIO are, you are not the King of the Hill anymore.

NVIDIA says that now your Xbox 360's graphics have been officialy overtaken by a notebook GPU.

The 8700M GT has the same 32 Stream Processors of the 8600M GT, but it has increased the frequency of the GPU to 625MHz from 472 MHz. The shader processor has also seen an increase, from 950MHz to 1,250MHz, the same as the memory bus, which now clocks at 800MHz instead of the 700MHz with a maximum 512MB on board.

This gives it the ability to match the performance of some of the best desktop cards of last year.

Three-Screened Laptop: Three times the fun

Laptops are much more convenient than desktops in most cases, but there are still some things you can do with a desktop that you just can't do with a laptop. Like having three monitors, for example. It's tough to make a portable version of that.

Or is it?

This Acme portable computer has two screens that can attach to either side of the main screen, giving you that popular three-screen setup without needing a pesky desktop computer. Sure, it's a bit unwieldy, but it's certainly easier to transport than three LCD flat panels and a tower.

Targa's desktop replacement laptop has RAID-5

If you're looking for a desktop replacement, check out what Targa has in their bag for you.

Targa's Raptor-60, which they’re calling the “first of its kind” to support RAID 5 (in JBOD, RAID 0, 1 or 5 forms), and that in its self makes this thing a heavy beast. But when you add in a 17-inch WSXGA+ screen driven by a dual NVIDIA GeForce 7950 you realise that this isn’t something you’ll be tucking under your arm and swaying off to the park with.

It's pretty sweet if you get all the options, and you'll pay for it too!!!

It can handle up to three SATA hard-drives and a Blu-Ray drive is optional. There is a range of processors, starting from a pretty boring Intel Core Duo 1.83GHz and ranging up to a 2.93GHz Core 2 Extreme.

Prices start at $2,345 although that only gets you half a gig of RAM, and lurch up to $5,481 for something massively over-specified - we’re talking 4GB of RAM, a couple of fast 200GB hard-drives and Vista Ultimate 64-bit.
