Maximum PC has a great comparison and review of Windows 7. They go over a lot of the new features, and compare it to Windows XP and Vista. As I have been saying, this is the OS that Vista should have been, even though Vista was not as bad as people led everyone to believe. Check out the article here.

Windows To Run On The iPhone

In what is sure to cause the explosion of many Mac heads, Citrix has announced that the iPhone will be able to run Windows apps. It will not be a true Windows OS running on the iPhone, as it will be using a Citrix Receiver. This will be remote screen software that connects to a PC, giving you the illusion that you are running Windows. Citrix claims that this will give iPhone users full Windows capability, including “cut and paste” within Widows mind you.

Rumor: Microsoft Looking To Launch Windows 7 By Holiday 2009

In what has truly signaled that Windows Vista has turned into 2008 speak for Windows ME, Microsoft has (mistakenly) leaked that they have a goal to ship their new OS Windows 7 by mid-2009. Word has that Microsoft plans to have Windows 7 pre-installed on most machines for the 2009 holiday season. So come this time next year, you could have your hands on the new Windows OS.
Not so sure that this is a good thing, but perhaps abandoning Vista’s negative stigma (deserved or not) might be the way to go for Microsoft.

Vista SP1 Released Tomorrow?

So the long awaited day is finally upon us......
The release of Vista SP1 is secretly set to be released tomorrow March 18th, and the world will have its answer to the question "does Vista truly suck?" My personal hope is that the answer will be "NO", considering that I'm writing on a Vista laptop right now. Some of the criticizing that it has gotten is unwarranted, with some people thinking it's fashionable just to hate anything that's Microsoft. But some of it is, with the long delay before it was release coupled with expensive hardware upgrades, and multiple versions that only confused the consumer certainly put it behind the 8 ball. So what changes must be made for Vista to rebound from the "You suck" land that it's been dwelling in? With so many people thinking that Vista isn't any good, has perception become reality?
What must SP1 have to fix Vista?
Can it be fixed?
Does anyone still care?

Cross Platform Compatibility

After reading an article that was in a mass subscription e-mail from Lockergnome which was apparently republished with the permission of (OS Weekly) regarding the topic of Cross Platform Compatibility. They took the angle of talking about programs which are written to work on Windows, Leopard, and various flavors of Linux. To go ahead and greatly shrink this story, the author basically wants to point out that creating programs, and simply porting them to work on other operating systems isn't enough. The aim, if you intend to succeed on multiple platforms is to not only port from the original system; but then utilize the available tools of each of the specific systems to maximize the program's WOW quotient. (or ability to impress)
Before I put forth my argument; please note that a decision must be made before embarking on cross compatibility. Do you have what is needed (funds, staff, investors, publishing strength) to pull it off. If not; then make it the best you can for the system you choose to go with period. If you wish to go further; then read on...
My angle is to take this theory and put it towards the current and future gaming consoles. We've all seen or played games that were big hits on one system, only to be ported to another system and fail miserably due to either lack of features, interface incompatibilities, or even program bugs which bog down the game on systems not originally programed for.
One can easily see that there just isn't any way to adapt a program between a Wii and a PS3 or XBox360; you're talking apples and oranges. In some cases it may just be too cost prohibitive to bridge these gaps; but I think I have a good example of why a developer needs to go the extra mile, and pay the extra bucks.
Look at Madden '08. The game is VERY different between the XBox360, PS3, and the Wii. First I'll concentrate on just the XBox360 vs the PS3. The game was created first for the XBox360 and by most accounts was a great success resulting in many people deciding that the XBox360 was the system for them. This became even more obvious when the PS3 version arrived. In essence the PS3 has incredible innate features. This machine can really do some amazing stuff; but programmers are a bit behind the curve with the PS3. (At the time of this post, they have caught up to a respectable level) The human eye can process 30 frames per second. Anything less than that and humans see a stuttering/almost slow/stop motion effect. Because Madden '08 was one of the best selling games of the holiday season; people would see console displays next to one another at retail outlets. Many of them would allow patrons to play Madden '08 to lure them in to a purchase. Due to not utilizing the philosophy of maximizing a games potential on each particular system; XBox360's were showing exceptional graphics at 60 frames per second. Sadly for Sony, The frame rate was at a paltry 20 frames per second. The human eye could easily see what appeared to be an inferior demonstration of the same game on what many concluded was an inferior system. The average consumer doesn't know any better; and seeing is believing. The PS3 looked like it just didn't have the horsepower. The truth of the matter is that Sony should have infused Tiberon/EASports (the maker of Madden '08 so that the programmers could have utilized Sony's expertise and made a far better looking/playing product. If this had occurred, the average consumer wouldn't necessarily have swarmed in greater numbers to purchase the XBox360 than the PS3. Yes this would have meant a bigger investment from Sony; but they would have made a much better impression at the retail markets and in the reviews that were written in the consumer gaming magazines. Many Many more PS3's would have been bought; and it would have been because that the developers did more than simply port and tweak Madden '08. They would have utilized the strengths of the PS3 to make Madden '08 shine.
Due to the Wii's interface differences; it demanded that developers go the extra distance to utilize the Wii's strengths to make the best game possible. While it paled in comparison graphically to the XBox360's version; the game-play (what the Wii's all about) gave a different dynamic justifying the game's sales on the Wii; and it probably made some people say; I like the way this feels, I'm buying a Wii over the other two systems.
So what do we learn here? Two systems had product that utilized their strengths; and one system did not. Perhaps it was Sony's arrogance that ultimately hurt their '07 sales (on many levels).
It is important that if you decide to not only make a game cross platform compatible, do more than simply port and tweak. Soup it up utilizing the consoles strengths. Yes it will create a larger initial investment; but it will also give both the consoles and game producers a far better return.

Windows 7 To Replace Vista By 2009?

Not sure if this means that Vista will become the Windows ME of this decade, but speculation is that Windows 7 will be released by mid-2009. This comes as a surprise to me because of the amount of time and money that was put into Vista. So once the bugs are worked out of Vista, there will be another OS that might be on the market.
Word is is that hardware manufacturers have already been given a early copy of the new OS, and the second and third builds are due out in Q2 and Q3. I would be surprised if it wasn't delayed, but even if it's a year, it would mark the first time that Mircosoft put out a new OS within 2 years time of each other.

Vista Updates Tomorrow

Well it's not quite SP1, but it will be a welcomed update. Come tomorrow, Microsoft will update Vista with some much needed features. The new update is said to "extends laptop battery life, improves the stability of wireless network connections, shortens recovery time after exiting hibernation or sleep, and deals with compatibility problems with some antivirus software."
These issues should have been addressed within the first week or two of the release, and not several months later. I personally have run into the battery life issue and the wireless network connection problem from time to time. So I'll be first in line to get this installed on my laptop ASAP, so hopefully my "Wow" experience with Vista will be of a good thing for a change.

Vista SP1, Faster And Smoother: Well I Hope So!

Some details are out about Windows Vista SP1 that is still in beta, and for early adopters of the OS, it's good news. The new update for Vista will increase system performance considerably, and will also fix annoying bugs that have plagued the OS since launch.
Wasn't Microsoft promising these same things before the launch of Vista? Oh well....
James Bannan from APC Magazine said “there is a very noticeable performance increase…There’s far less hard drive thrashing and in general the system seems much smoother and more responsive.”
It also will have a “Create a Recovery Disc” that will allow you to create a system restore DVD. Still no word on when the release of this update will finally hit the streets, but I hope soon.

Back To School PC: $298

Well it's back to school time for students and the guys at Everex is trying to help your broke ass out. Everex released the Impact GC3502 with students in mind, and also the environment. This "green" PC only consumes 20W of power due to a 1.5GHz VIA C7-D processor.
This isn't going to blow any doors off with accessories, but it does have 1GB of ram, OpenOffice, an 80GB hard drive, DVD/CD-RW, and even Windows Vista Home Basic (Which I'm not sure is a good idea on a scaled down system). You won't be using this thing to game on, due to Everex designing it for someone on a budget, and with a price of $298 you can understand. Wal-Mart is carrying the units so you better hurry.
No word if a monitor comes with the unit, but you can find those cheap.

Safari For Windows Tops 1 Million Downloads In 48 Hours

Despite its problems, more than 1 million people downloaded the Safari Web browser for Windows in the first 48 hours of its availability. Apple claims that the browser is the fastest in the whole wide world, but I’ve read a few reports online that suggest otherwise.
And it seems to run slower than Firefox on my system; that’s all I care about.
So congrats to Apple on this milestone. There’s still some ground to make up in its competition with Firefox and Internet Explorer and some Windows users appear to be militantly anti-Apple (I'm glad I'm not in that company!!!), but it's a good start nonetheless.

Exploit For Safari For Windows Spotted

Apple released its Safari Web browser for Windows (and Mac!) yesterday. There’s already a so-called 0day exploit for it, one that causes the browser to instantly crash when visiting a specific Web site. This Web site, to be exact.
It’s mainly a proof of concept, so the exploit won’t really damage your installation, but the proof is in the pudding, as they say. Now Apple knows that nerds are working 24/7 to poke holes in its precious Web browser.

Windows Vista SP1: comming soon!!!

It does, in fact, exist, folks. So don’t think I’ve gone crazy. At the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference a PC was shown running the service pack, “Windows Build 6001 Service Pack 1, v113.”, and the crowd went absolutely buck wild. I think. In any case, the service pack has been spotted and now we wait for the official release date.
Don't believe me?
