Comcast To Charge $2.95 Monthly For Tivo Service

Well we finally have pricing for when Comcast rolls out Tivo to your neck of the woods, and like we thought, Tivo will be treated like a premium service. Comcast will be rolling out the Tivo UI on those crappy ass Motorola/Scientific Atlanta for $2.95 extra a month. Or you can keep that horrid Motorola/Scientific Atlanta UI that we've had to endure in order to have an HD DVR. Comcast will download the UI to your current DVR, so the change should be painless. I think $2.95 a month is a small price to pay to keep your sanity when searching for when your favorite show will air.

Cow Bell Deal: Tivo Series 2 For $49.99

If you've haven't joined the Tivo revolution simply because you thought it was just an expensive VCR, then it's time to get off the pot my friend. Tivo is offering their 80-hour series 2 dual tuner dvr for only $49.99 when you sign up for one of their plans, that's $200 off the normal price.

That's not bad at all.

And let me tell you, Tivo is nothing like your broke ass tape winding, dust collecting VCR. Tivo is the ipod of DRV's, and absolutely nothing beats the user interface. It can find your favorite shows, record the entire season and if you like, only record the first runs. If your away on vacation and you remembered that you wanted to record 'The View', you can jump online and tell your Tivo to record it.

Tivo Desktop

For those of you that have been enjoying your Tivo, there's more good news. Tivo has finally realeased Desktop 2.5, including support for Windows Vista. Thank heavens. I've been waiting for the full Vista support. I had desktop working when I upgraded from XP, but since rebuilding the computer, I was not going to take the time to install XP, then Tivo Desktop, then Vista, and still not have it run right. It also includes addiotion iPod connectivity and support for Divx. Read about it and catch the download link from Electronisa here.

PS3 And Tivo Team Up

Earlier this week Sony announced that the PS3 would have the ability to double as a DVR, which is cool, I guess. So in a effort to make good on that promise, Sony and Tivo have signed a deal that would use Tivo software in the PS3. This kinda pisses me off because I've been waiting for Tivo to team up with my cable service, and get this crappy HD-DVR software off the Scientific Atlantic that's haunting my living room.

And I think that the PS3's 60GB and 80GB isn't enough for HD content. I'm thinking that's like 5 shows recorded in HD. And I have to go with Gizmodo's take on the whole thing, "Sony's definitely known for putting everything but great games into the PS3 so far, so why not a DVR?".

Tivo Series 3 Lite: $299

The one thing that I absolutely love about Tivo is the UI. The HD-DVR that the cable company stuck me with just plain out sucks! If you ever used Tivo you know how easy, user friendly, and just out right smarter than anything out there. But the only problem is that Tivo's Series 3 HD-DVR came out at an insane $799, which priced it's self right out of the market, especially when you could rent a HD-DVR for $10 a month from the cable company (no matter how bad it sucks).

So Tivo decided to lower the price to $499, which was a step in the right direction but still up there. The CEO of Tivo Tom Rogers agreed, and now Tivo's new Series 3 Lite has come out at a more reasonable $299. The TS3L has a 160GB HDD compared to the 250GB from the TS3, and it doesn't have the OLED display or THX certification, and they left out the nifty remote controller.

Sounds fair for the price. No word on the availability, but it should be soon.

TiVo announces most-watched commercials service

TiVo has announced a new service for advertisers and those interested in tracking commercial viewership, the Top Commercial Rankings reports, which is based on info gleaned using TiVo's StopWatch feature that tracks viewer behavior second-by-second. The feature has TiVo compiling reports for April and May on metrics like the top commercials watched overall (Disturbia and Ford trucks), or the least fast-forwarded campaigns (FedEx and Samsung Jitterbug). The report includes interesting insight into how viewers watch television, even timeshifted programs, and should provide advertisers more information about how to maximize their impact. Now to get this report to studio execs to keep them from blaming DVRs for the downfall of their industry.

Series 3 Lite, Comcast Motorola Tivo annouced today

Tivo had some good news to report today on a couple of different fronts.

Finally Tivo has seen the error of their ways and has announced its Series 3 Lite -- a 'lower priced' HD offering targeting a wider audience when it's released sometime "later this year."

Also announced was the August commercial launch of the Comcast Motorola TiVo -- no, really -- initially rolling out in the New England division meaning Boston and vicinity will have first dibs.

I've been waiting to jump to Comcast once they introduce this Motorola Tivo that has been talked about for the last two years.

So this is good news for me.
