Users across the country are reporting better than expected Edge coverage, but very poor 3G. But wait, it's also looking to be happening in Europe as well.
This definitely seems to be pointing to an Apple issue. Most likely they tried to put too many bands into the device (the iPhone does support a ridiculously large amount of Cell Phone bands) and pushing the limit of the production lines. The lines alone could be causing some sort of quality issues as well.
