Man I tell ya, Eminem makes me laugh sometimes.
Eminem is suing Apple once again, for selling his music on iTunes with out his permission. If you remember he also filed a lawsuit against Apple for using his song 'lose yourself' in an unaired Apple TV commercial. The lawsuit this time centers on if Universal (the label who Eminem is on) can cut a deal with Apple to sell his music without his consent.
It looks like Eminem is looking for a larger cut than what Apple is paying Universal for his music. I think it's a little strange that he's going after Apple, and not after his label who brokered the deal in the first place. In all fairness though, I really do think that Apple should disclose how much of that $.99 goes to the artist.

Apple doesn't pay the artist. It pays the label, remember? Why do you assume that Steve-o keeps this info undisclosed? A little google for ya:

Record labels make about 70 cents per download, and that's more profit than they make selling CDs, according to Apple CEO Steve Jobs. "If they want to raise the prices, it just means they're getting a little greedy," Jobs said at the Apple Expo in Paris in September

So it's the record label that is riping off the artist, not Apple?
I know that Steve-o likes to think Apple has nothing to do with it. But iTunes is still a catalyst to what's going on. Just 'washing your hands of it' doesn't make you any less at fault.
So you think Apple should in some way force the label to pay its artists more?
The artists have contracts with the labels. I don't see why you think Apple should force the label to give artists more money so they can buy more bling than I'll ever be able to comprehend. Ever watch "Cribs?" Still feel sorry for 'em?
This from the guy who calls illegal piracy thieves from Russia who steal money and give $0.00 to artists one of his favorite sites.
"I don't see why you think Apple should force the label to give artists more money so they can buy more bling than I'll ever be able to comprehend. Ever watch "Cribs?" Still feel sorry for 'em?"
This coming from a guy who was so concerned that the Russian website wasn't paying the artist.
I don't feel sorry for either the label or the artist. They picked those professions and they have to deal with the pitfalls that come with it.
I'm happy to see them all get screwed. But for Apple to pretend that they are not a piece in the cog is just naive.
"This coming from a guy who was so concerned that the Russian website wasn't paying the artist."
Absolutely. No contradiction there. I don't think artists need to be paid more (which you do), but I also don't think it's right for anyone to take money and give stolen products in return. You don't seem to have a problem with that, which I don't think I'll ever comprehend.
"But for Apple to pretend that they are not a piece in the cog is just naive." "Just 'washing your hands of it' doesn't make you any less at fault."
Piece of what cog, now? Where's the scandal for which you think Steve is at fault?
And you think that for-profit piracy websites are not at fault? DoEs NoT CoMpUte.?! /BSOD
"And you think that for-profit piracy websites are not at fault? DoEs NoT CoMpUte.?! /BSOD"
Never said that. I'm sure they are also at fault.
"but I also don't think it's right for anyone to take money and give stolen products in return. You don't seem to have a problem with that, which I don't think I'll ever comprehend."
No Michael, I just don't care!!! For me to worry about millionaires making more money is just plain dumb. I'm not telling anyone to pirate anything. The post was never about that.
"Piece of what cog, now? Where's the scandal for which you think Steve is at fault?
Obviously Eminem doesn't think that Apple was above it all.
I'll let you answer your own complaint with this one:
"I think it's a little strange that he's going after Apple, and not after his label who brokered the deal in the first place."
"I'm not telling anyone to pirate anything."
"As reported yesterday one of my favorite sites AllofMp3.com was pressured...to close its doors."
"this time they're legal (sure, Ok). This site offers MP3 downloads at around .15 cents a song, beat that itunes!!!"
You supported a site who you knew was pirating.
"You supported a site who you knew was pirating."
Sure do!!! But just because I don't have a problem with them, doesn't mean that I'm telling you to do it. And it also doesn't mean that I do it. I might not have a problem with people who smoke pot, but it doesn't mean that I do it. I think you're smart enough to figure that out.
"I think it's a little strange that he's going after Apple, and not after his label who brokered the deal in the first place."
Wasn't a complaint. I think he should be going after his label instead. But he obviously thinks that Apple is the major problem, and if he thinks that, are there other artist feel the same but just don't file suits?
So you think it's wrong to pirate, but you support a site that pirates. Do you plan on supporting other illegal activities on your blog somewhere? Why choose piracy? Still doesn't compute, but I'll get over it.
"Wasn't a complaint."
This sounds like a complaint:
"I know that Steve-o likes to think Apple has nothing to do with it. But iTunes is still a catalyst to what's going on. Just 'washing your hands of it' doesn't make you any less at fault."
So if M&M has a complaint, you assume guilt.
Here's a company, CD Baby, that gives all but 9% of iTunes profits to the artist. Read some of the comments and then explain the cog stuff to me again.
http://cdbaby.org/stories/05/07/22/3815814.html
"Good news.
"Apple iTunes USA just raised their wholesale payout to 70 cents per download. (The price for the customer remains the same at 99 cents.)
"Since CD Baby only keeps an itsy-bitsy 9% cut, (the best rate in the industry!), that means you make 63.7 cents per song.
"Do you plan on supporting other illegal activities on your blog somewhere?"
Stay tuned!!!
If you feel that strongly about it, here is an idea...Make a Post. Tell the whole world that not all the writers here at Cow Bell Tech don't support AllofMP3 or any other site like that. That way, I'm not the only one influencing the world.
"So if M&M has a complaint, you assume guilt. "
Nope, it was just a question. See below:
"But he obviously thinks that Apple is the major problem, and if he thinks that, are there other artist feel the same but just don't file suits?"
"Here's a company, CD Baby, that gives all but 9% of iTunes profits to the artist. Read some of the comments and then explain the cog stuff to me again."
Anyone can link to a site that will support their argument fanboy.
http://downhillbattle.org/itunes/
You STILL haven't shown me what Apple has done to some catalist some kinda cog somewhere, somehow. Details, please. What's Steve washing his hands for again?
I showed you a company that doesn't just support my argument, it shows that artists are getting a great majority of what iTunes charges the customer. That's what this argument is all about, but you refuse to see it. Instead, you counter with a biased website. The site I linked has no bias. The customers are reaping the rewards. You're too blinded by the argument to see it, piracy boy.
"The site I linked has no bias."
The site you linked to is a forum, where anyone can write anything. No bias there right?
"it shows that artists are getting a great majority of what iTunes charges the customer."
It shows that the label is getting the money, not necessarily the artist. If Apple doesn't mind that the artist might be getting screwed, that's fine. M&M just doesn't see it that way. And that's not to say he's right, but it just makes you wonder.
(As eyes roll)
Ok Michael you win, if you think that Apple is above any unethical practices that's fine.

We can go back and forth with this all day, but I just don't have the time. But I am having fun though.
