It's Civilization on a grander scale

From the mind of Will Wright, the creator of The Sims, comes SPORE™, an epic journey that takes you from the origin and evolution of life through the development of civilization and technology and eventually all the way into the deepest reaches of outer space.

Tide Pool Phase - Fight with other creatures and consume them to adjust the form and abilities of your creature. It's survival of the fittest at the most microscopic level.

Creature Phase - Venture onto land and help your creature learn and evolve with forays away from your nest. The only way to grow is by taking chances!

Tribal Phase - Instead of controlling an individual creature, you are now caring for an entire tribe. Give them tools and guide their interactions as you upgrade their state of existence.

Civilization Phase - Once your city is established, your creatures begin seeking out and interacting with other cultures. Make contact with an olive branch or a war cry. The goal for your creatures is to conquer the planet.

Space Phase - The time has come to move on to other worlds in your solar system. Make contact, colonize, or terraform, then venture further to find other solar systems. A 'mission' structure provides new goals in your quest for galactic dominance.

Preview : Civilization Revolutions

Here's a good little article about the upcoming Civilization: Revolutions. I think they have something good going here. Hopefully the will be some sales success for this title (as long as its deserved) so we can get more like it. I'd personally love to see this formula done for Colonization, Seven Cities of Gold and some of the other great turn based games.
Read it here at Next Generation.

Civilization- a Retrospective

The game of Civilization has grown and has been Game of the year more times than not. The second version is still my all time favorite game.
What vexes me is that while growing up; Nelson and I would play every last type of turn based strategy game made; Chess, Balance of Power, Risk, Etc, Etc. Nelson not only had a high winning percentage of these types of games; but he had a passion for them as well. This is why I cannot figure out why he NEVER got into the Civ Series. It is the ULTIMATE turn based strategy game. It's never the same twice, and it's got a hypnotic power, whether you're playing alone against however many opponents you want, or multi player. The article I'm jumping to has a very interesting paragraph leading into the whole series of the game. it goes as follows:

Few games are as additively fun and as infinitely re-playable as Civilization, a turn-based historical strategy game where a player single-handedly guides the development of a civilization over the course of Millenia, from the stone age to the space age. The game feels uncannily accurate, as if it actually represents the way the world could have unfolded if the course of history were nudged over just a bit.
This article is long, but the series has been out growing steadily for about 15 years. Read, and come back to the article if you can't finish up all at once; just like the game; save when real life interrupts. Here's the jump.

Civilization Revolution from E3

Here's a great interview with one of the developers from Firaxis where they show a lot of the gameplay and talk about features of the game. As they are showing it now, I would buy this game. I can't wait to see the finished product. The thing I like best is they are estimating that you'll be able to play a full game in about 3 hours. Which is great, except it will probably not stop those 5am Civ runs, because if you finish a game at 1 am, you'll probably end up starting a new game. So long sleep. It was fun while it lasted.

Civilization Revolution

Oh are we in trouble now. Not only has Sid Meier given us 4 different versions of Crack on PC i.e. Civilization, now he's putting it on the consoles. I don't know about you guys, but I had to refuse to buy Civ 4 because it's kind of like Dottie in Armaggedon. A life sucking bitch from which there is no escape. Sid is already calling this the game he always wanted to create. Loose translation, we're f'ing doomed.
