Verizon To Offer FiOS To Some Areas, Almost Affordable

Oh joyous day..... Sort of.

Verizon will offer FiOS service to 16 states with download speeds of up to 50 Mbps (20 Mbps up). That is an insanely fast downloading speed considering most home users don't have anything over 10 Mbps. But of course there is always a down side to every good thing, and that comes in the way of the $140-per-month that Verizon will bend you over for. There are second and third tier service at 30 Mbps down (15 Mbps up) for $90 a month, and 20 Mbps (20 Mbps up) for $65 a month respectively. I've always felt that fiber optics was the future of broadband, but my understanding was that it is cheaper to maintain and distribute to customers than DSL or cable, so why does it cost more? Better service with less overhead for the company? Of course we're going to make you pay more for it!!! Check the quote:

"Starting today, Verizon is offering its high-speed symmetrical FiOS Internet services to consumers in 16 states served by its advanced, all-fiber-optic network. The symmetrical services make possible equally fast downstream and upstream connections of up to 15 megabits per second (Mbps) or up to 20 Mbps depending on the state where the service is sold.

At the same time, Verizon also has dramatically increased the upload speed of its fastest FiOS Internet services across its FiOS Internet service areas. These new services offer consumers downstream/upstream connections of either up to 50 Mbps/20 Mbps or up to 30 Mbps/15 Mbps depending on the state where the service is sold."

Well I hope you live in one of these states so you can take advantage of these deals. (yeah right)
