The New Xbox 360 UI

Come November 19th the new UI redesign for Xbox 360 will officially hit the consoles, and judging by some of the early reactions, it’s going to be an ass kicker. Gone is the blade system which in my opinion was ok, but certainly lacked style or substance. The UI has a smoother scrolling feature and will allow you to build your own avatar. But the biggest feature for me is the Netflix streaming that will let you download and watch standard and high definition movies. Netflix says that they already have 300 HD movies available, which is far from all the movies that they have in their inventory, but it will grow from there. This feature alone should make people run to pick up an Xbox 360 this holiday season. Our friends at Crunchgear got a chance to test drive the new UI, and were kind enough to provide video.

Check it out.

I'm looking forward to this, especially the Netflix portion. What I want to know is how is the pausing, rewind and fast forward when using Netflix.

I'm betting it functions very similar to On-Demand on cable. The movie file is downloaded to a "Sandbox" isolated part of the hard drive in a VERY COMPRESSED format. (Still HD but as economically delivered as possible)

Fast Forwarding, Rewinding and pausing should be as smooth as on Tivo.

FYI, I'm still without the 360 I hope to someday buy (perhaps from Malcolm if that possibility still exists). The economy is rough for everybody these days. the way I see it; investing in staying home and having fun is a lot cheaper than going out all the time.

Thus far that argument has not cleared the tower (My Wife).

Her solution. Stay home and enjoy what you have. (and I really can't complain. Thank God we have what we do!)
