A company based in Chicago has developed a new digital recording platform. So what's the big deal you ask? They've provided all the information on the device, including it's circuitry, on their website and are telling hackers to have at it. How cool is that?
The device, Neuros OSD, sells for $230. The negatives at this moment is that it only seems to accept S-Video and that you provide your own storage. The positive? You can configure it to do whatever you want and it records in the MPEG-4 format!

I don't understand why more companies don't do this. It would only make for a better product (see Linux).
