So today I finally deide to take some of my time away from the work I should be doing to play with my Windows Vista laptop. I'm sure you may remember me talking about it before, an IBM X60 that is running Vista Home Premium. Due to the fact that it supposedly has this new tool to replace ActiveSync, Windows Mobile Device Center, I decided to set it up.
I've got an AT&T 3125 smartphone that I'm pretty much attached to. It has my entire life on it. With ActiveSync, it all syncs up perfectly. So I figured this would be easy.
Silly me. Even though Vista ships with Windows Mail, Windows Contacts, etc...it cannot sync a device unless Outlook is installed. That's right. Useless features are a part of the OS. Outlook 2007 is a poorly written, slow program that I do not want on my PC. In part I don't because this is a home PC, and Windows Mail, Calendar, and Contacts is more than what I need for home. But, if I really want to do this, I have to pay $110 dollars for Outlook itself (remember, outlook does not ship with Office Home & Student). Just to sync my contacts with my laptop. Wheee.
Thank you Microsoft for once again doing something absolutely retarded. No wonder more and more people are moving to Apple more frequently and are so willing to call Steve Jobs the messiah.

Write me at my email addy; I'll take care of it for you.
I will also explain to you how; though I won't go into it here.
...and you're damn well right that they should put this essential part into Vista basic premium!!!
Is active sync not part of Vista?
Were you trying to sync with Windows mail, and were getting kick back? I know that software that came with the phone should allow you to sync it. You shouldn't have to buy Outlook to have this feature.
By the way, does Apple have a solution to this? Can you just sync a smartphone with a Mac?
Seriously, get in touch with me when you get a moment. I can help; and it's no skin off my back.
If you for some reason are having troubles finding my e-mail addy, ask Nelson or Malclom.
