So let me see if I get this straight. I pay $499 (plus tax) or $599 (plus tax) for the phone. Bare minimum I pay $59.99 a month for any sort of plan on it. But, that's not all. As we've seen at the mall, holy crap there are a ton of accessories. Silicon protective cases in case it drops. Screen covers so that you don't scratch the screen. Car chargers. You name it. In all, the average user will probably spend in excess of $600 for the lower end phone just to fit in with the masses. That is only on the Edge network. And aside from the screen offers no other functionality that hasn't been seen in countless other phones.
I've never been a fan of the exposed screen phones. I'm a geek already, I don't need to walk around with some phone strapped to my belt to make me even geekier. I do that by myself. If I can just drop it in my pocket and not worry about it, if I have to buy all these accessories just to make sure I don't break it...tell me what the point is?
Really neat phone. But impracticle and will create more lemmings.

I'm thinking I might want the phone-less iPhone if Apple decides to make it. Folks are signing up for ATT and cancelling in <30 days. The wifi still works and there's no contract. It's just not enough memory for me.
Wow Matt, that was pretty strong. It's hard to disagree with most of what you said, but would you feel the same way if the phone cost only $200?
I think the cool factor will wear off, and then you will want this thing to function like a good smartphone, which it won't.
My name's Mike, but anyway... It's not the cost, it's the size. I ride my bicycle a fair amount, and it's nice to keep my phone in my back pocket. I'd use a bluetooth headset of some kind, and it'd be nice to listen to music and be able to click over for a phonecall... anyway, I'm saying this without even picking the dang thing up. I'm sure I'll want it when I see it, but I'm still holding out for more memory and G3.
Uhhh... Actually my comment was for Matt and his post. I love the way the phone looks, but they will need 3G and GPS to get me hooked. I'm sure that if I walked into Apple, I would love the phone as is. But I know that Apple has a better version just around the corner, like Christmas.
Oh, I missed that Matt wrote the original post.
Well Nelson, isn't the point the fact that the phone doesn't cost $200, but $500? I paid $150 for my smartphone that offers all the same functionality minus the touch screen. Adn Apple is making over 100% profit on these devices.
It's no different than what Sony does. The name gets stamped on and all of a sudden the value of the device doubles. While they certainly make a better product than Sony, the cost is killer.
I can't wait to see what happens in 6 months with these things, especially with no removable battery.
