In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Steve Jobs admits that the network that the iphone is using (EDGE) is slow. He did say that using the WiFi function on the iphone would make surfing the Internet much faster. The only problem is that you have to be near an WiFi hotspot to make this happen.
While the (EDGE) network is fine for email and simple texting, surfing the Internet at a reasonable speed would require a faster network such as 3G.
