I was reading a ZDnet Blog written by Mary Jo Foley and while she was at Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) in Los Angeles this week. She saw a version of Vista that had a build number in the lower right corner of the screen, it said: “Windows Build 6001 Service Pack 1, v113.”
Wonderful I thought! Let's crush some bugs add new features. Usually first Service Packs fix bugs (which we know permiate Vista); and second Service Packs Fix bugs, but also delivers some value added new features. However, I became very concened when I read in her column (click here) that quoted Microsoft analyst Michael Cherry saying that a number of people at Microsoft no longer see the use of Service Packs. Sure, we can download indivdual patches, and maybe they'll offer some larger roll-up of many patches for Vista; but how are the new features going to be added without service packs? Does Microsoft plan to charge money for delivering new features, or will they just stop that altogether, and only put out new Operating Systems? I really don't like how that sounds; and I'm glad Mary brought this to the public's attention. One other point I'd like to make is perhaps a year from now I'll want to format and re-install Vista. Without a MAJOR rollup, or service pack, this will be a tedious problem that will take a much longer time than simply using a Service Pack.
We all need to write Microsoft and give them feedback; otherwise things are not going to be fun in the future.
