First Look- Windows Vista

So on a side note, I purchased an upgrade copy of Windows Vista Home Premium today. Why? Well, Comp USA is closing and it was on sale. And I wanted one

Install is easy. It pretty much wipes itself. I have found that it will encourage people to do a clean install even when doing an upgrade. Install did take a while but it actually nailed a fair amount of the driver installs with 3 exceptions, which was quite unusual. The laptop I installed this on, an IBM X60, is built as a Vista Capable machine.

What have I noticed so far? One, startup time is much faster than XP. Reboots talk far less time. Second, the continued popup messages of "Are you sure you want to do what you just double clicked" really gets on my nerve. There's also a lot more Microsoft Propietary software that is forced as a standard, with the absolutely crappy Windows Defender being pushed down my throat. I also don't much like the navigation inside of Vista. Getting to a place to view programs and everything is far too much.

But overall it's a huge stepup from XP in look and feel *cough*appleripoff*cough*. But it's a step in the right direction.

Where as I'm not to happy with being asked 'are you sure you want to do this' every time I access anything close to security. I think that this a good 'not great' upgrade for Windows. Some how there should be a 'this action is ok, and don't ask me again' button built in on the OS. That is a little disappointing. I think the look and feel of the OS is great, as long as you have a gig or more in your system. I love the 'snip it' feature as it allows you to cut just what you what in a website or picture and capture it. I think that it will be a better OS once SP1 comes out for it, but for now I like it a lot.

All you have to do is turn off the UAC. It's in the user accounts settings. I really like it already. I was also surprised that it found all my drivers right off the bat. I know with the first couple betas it would take quite a few downloads before it would find my sound drivers, but that was mostly because I'm using a shuttle XPC case with sound built in the system. But this time it found it first shot. I think I'm still going to use the Nvidia reference drivers though. I like the controls that it adds.
